Muslim Marriage Registration
The Muslim Marriages and Divorces (Registration) Act, 1974 provides that every marriage solemnized under Muslim law shall be registered in accordance with the Act.
The Act provides for government-licensed Nikah Registrars for specified areas.
When the Marriage Is Solemnized by a Nikah Registrar
Where the marriage is solemnized by the Nikah Registrar himself, the Act provides that the registrar shall register the marriage at once.
Marriage Solemnized by Another Person
Where a marriage is solemnized by a person other than the Nikah Registrar, the law provides for reporting to the concerned Nikah Registrar within the specified period.
These provisions are based on Section 5 of the Muslim Marriages and Divorces (Registration) Act, 1974.
